SUN activity night!

So here is proof that we were told to go to the bar on school nights, it was even for a class and we get 2 ECTS (european credit) for it!!!!

As I've mentioned before SUN stands for Students United in the Netherlands. Our SUN mentors are "in charge of" making sure we have fun during our stay, as well as help us out and point us in the direction of someone who can help us further, such as where's a hospital or where's the best Coffee House in the city center....thank you Bart ;)

Currently we are still in the Introduction "week." This friday is our last event for it, but we might be missing it due to the fact that we will be on our way to Amsterdam to catch our connecting bus for our trip to Paris, France!!! 11 euro by bus!!!! yay! Anyways, so this post is about the Introduction programme.

Activity 1
We started it out by getting our awesome SUN T-shirts, complete with sponsors on the back....Notice the Student bar Het Vliegende Paard being the main one. From there we got an Induction meeting, complete with speeches from the SUN president, Dean of Business school, and a few of the International Teachers.

I'm in group orange, so I have an orange shirt...

After the speeches, we headed into the main entrance area of the C building and (no joke) were given a choice between Heineken or Wine that Windesheim makes and sells to drink as well as some typical Dutch snacks.....is it normal for a school to serve alcohol on the premise for school functions??? hmmm.....
We then split up into our groups: Orange, white, red, and blue. (Charla is in the red group) and played "introduction games." Ours were each person says something they like, have, or do for fun. Examples: I've been to Italy, I have a dog, or I like to go dancing. And if we agree we step forward, it was a fun way of seeing what we all have in common.
After that was done, we of course headed to the Flying Horse (student bar) for drinks...

Activity 2
This one was one of the least exciting activities we will be doing, but to be honest it could have been worse. It was a Welcome from a "Vormann" or "President" of the Council at the Municipality of Zwolle http://www.hanse.org/en/die-hanse-today/organisation/council.php. Complete with coffee, tea, and small cookies we watched a quick Welcome video of Zwolle. We then also played a quick trivia game...on Dutch/Zwolle culture. Needless to say we weren't that bad at it, until a question about the royal family came up and stumped half the group, since it was a YES or NO type quiz...

Donal taking his fake job too seriously

 Activity 3
This activity has been the best so far. We had a "treasure hunt" in the city center, and then a BBQ at The Flying Horse!!!
Treasure Hunt The goal of the game was to find all eight of our mentors and answer questions they had relating to Dutch culture. If you answer the question right, they give you a letter. After finding all eight mentors and getting all eight letters you had to form the key Dutch word and be the first group to bring it back to the bar. It was really funny, cuz each mentor was dressed up at as a Dutch "character" and some groups were going all out to win (since they had made bets and losers had to cook a meal of their native food for someone else's group).

Frits as a famous Dutch pianist
Lise as a Cheese maker

Orange Day

Ayodele and "the mayor"

Bart as a worker
Rose, our other orange
 SUN mentor
However, you could also "cheat" and have gone straight to "the mayor" and she told us to go to Bart, who was in front of Coffee United and gave us free samples of coffee or hot chocolate. The first few groups were lucky enough to have the Dutch word written on the bottom of the cups. ;) Charla's group won...

BBQ Time After the Treasure Hunt we were given a free BBQ at The Flying Horse, which was probably the best meal I've had since we arrived in Europe. Our entrees were bread, a kind of potato salad, as well as a rice based salad much like the potato salad, and the BEST seasoned potato wedges I've ever had. Not even kidding. I could've have eaten 3 plates full and not gotten sick of it, and I was not the only one. We also each got three pieces of meat: Grilled Chicken skewers, a Hamburger patty, and a Sausage link. Hope you're not hungry cuz here are some food photos!!

The Entrees
My free beer

Did I also mention that since we are in the SUN program,
we got these tokens for a free beer that night, but then more
tokens for beers tuesday and wednesday nights for only a euro.
